THATCHING INSTRUCTIONS

CAPES:
The goal is to thatch the structure in a manner that it doesn’t end up with a “postage stamp” appearance. It’s also important that once finished, the thatching will wear out as evenly as possible. A double thickness is installed.

INSTALLATION:
Begin with first row of capes on bottom edge of structure
-Staple capes in rows. Lay one single row all around structure, overlapping about
2” side-to-side.
-Second layer: Center capes over the seam from the under layer. (like laying roofing shingles). Continue laying capes side-to-side, overlapping about 2”

Next row of capes (above first row)
Lay in the same manner as above, lay bottom fringed portion of capes about 9” above the first row, or as needed to adjust to your structure. Use a double layer of thatch.

Continue rows upward same as described above.
Notes:
-Staples: Galvanized, 1/2” or slightly larger.
-Thatch capes won’t shed and can be cut to fit corners/sides.
-Any left over thatch can be stored for future repairs.

APPLYING THATCH ROUNDS TO PALAPA UMBRELLA
Fold each circle of thatching in half with the smooth, woven part facing outward, If one circle is slightly larger than the other, use the larger one first. Fold in the ends of this half circle, then position it over frame so that it is centered as close as possible with the top peak of the umbrella framework.
Carefully extend the half-round until it covers half of the frame. Then with the bristled end of a broom, push out the half of the palm so that the circle opens up to cover the full frame. Gently hand adjust the palm circle so that it is centered. Staple thatch top to frame rim; imagining 4 corners on the outside rim, and staple first the 4 corners (pulling on the thatch to make sure it hangs over), then all around the rim. Next do the same with the second thatch round on top of the first one.
Finally, staple through both layers of thatch, up and down the wooden arms of your palapa frame at 6” – 8” intervals.
Later: Hose off thatch very well. Hose off any palm residue that may wash onto patio slab.
